SYNOPSIS
The Mediterranean Institute of Maritime Archaeology in Syracuse, Sicily, was founded in the 1950s by my father, Piernicola Gargallo di Castel Lentini was a close friend and associate of Professor Luigi Bernabo Brea, archaeologist and highly regarded Director of the Department of Antiquities in eastern Sicily. Yet it was the former’s extensive knowledge of classical antiquity that induced him to frame a series of pivotal questions relating to the history of ancient sea lanes. This, in turn, occasioned the founding of the Mediterranean Institute of Maritime Archaeology. With Olof Gollcher in Malta among its chief collaborators, the Institute soon garnered what was to become it’s far-reaching international reputation. Along with pioneer maritime research-scientist, Jacques Cousteau, Piernicola Gargallo was premier recipient of the Golden Trident Award in Ustica, a prestigious award during the 1960s, which, among others, was also conferred on Walt Disney, Fulco Quilici.
