SYNOPSIS
A new film from WWF, MAREDOLCE, looks at the challenges that artisanal fishers face and the opportunities for more sustainable and innovative practices offered by transforming the small-scale fishing sector. The film is a tribute to the Mediterranean Sea and the value – historical and cultural – of its artisanal fishing communities. Re-invention is the film’s key word. Timeless traditions are interwoven with creative solutions and the use of the latest technology by Peppe, Antonio, Stefania and Giuseppe who share the same mission: to protect the sea and safeguard small-scale fishing. As we join them during their day-to-day activities, they tell their stories of the past, the present and the future, and give us an insight into their profession. Their enthusiasm to invest in alternative solutions towards more sustainable small-scale fishing, so that future generations can enjoy a sea rich in resources, is the film’s leitmotif, a delicately woven net of thoughts and memories that reveals the connections and the contrasts between generations.
The film was produced as part of the WWF project ‘Transforming Mediterranean Small-scale Fisheries’ which involves 20 coastal artisanal fishing communities in 10 Mediterranean countries, to ensure better management of marine resources in a search for a balance between our use of natural resources and their conservation.
